What is a Metering Skid?
A metering skid is an essential hybrid mechanical-electronic system designed to precisely measure and control liquid transfers, especially in industries handling hydrocarbons such as fuels and liquefied gases.
Metering skids are composed of four key components:
- a positive displacement meter to measure the liquid volume,
- a strainer to eliminate particles and dirt from the measured fluid,
- a flow computer to manage measurements and system parameters,
- a flow control valve that regulates the liquid flow rate.
These systems ensure accurate and reliable measurements, crucial for custody transfers and applications requiring high precision.
Key advantages of Metering Skids in Custody Transfer Operations
Metering skids offer significant advantages for liquid transfer applications where accuracy, safety, and control are critical.
The benefits include:
- Enhanced Process Control: Operators can monitor key parameters, modify operations in real time, and respond to system interlocks, improving safety and efficiency.
- High Measurement Accuracy: Accurate and repeatable measurements reduce errors, leading to significant cost savings by recording the exact volume or mass of transferred liquids;
- Integration and Automation: The batch controller allows seamless integration with SCADA or TAS systems for remote monitoring and control, as well as data reporting for fiscal requirements.
- Versatile Inputs and Outputs: The system supports a wide range of digital and analog inputs/outputs, allowing for flexible configurations and customization.
ISOIL Impianti’s metering skids can also integrate with additive injection skids or additional metering lines for blending, offering a comprehensive solution for complex liquid transfer applications.
A Case Study: Metering Skids for a Project in Bangladesh
ISOIL Impianti recently collaborated with a prominent oil &gas company in Bangladesh, leader in its market, who owns one of the country’s largest private-sector bitumen production plants.
In 2022, they sought ISOIL Impianti’s expertise, through local Partner, to upgrade outdated mechanical systems and implement new electronic metering systems for diesel, naphtha, and fuel oil.
ISOIL Impianti provided custom-designed skid-mounted metering systems tailored to varying flow rates, including:
- 18 units of 4" size metering skids;
- 3 units of 8" size metering skids;
- 1 unit of 10" size metering skid;
- 1 unit of 8" master meter for calibration;
The project concluded in October 2024, with ISOIL Impianti overseeing on-site commissioning and calibration to ensure optimal performance and precision.
This collaboration highlights ISOIL Impianti's commitment to providing complete solutions, including after-sales support.
